ABB REG216 system

2025-07-14

The ABB REG216 system has become the guardian of core power equipment with multiple redundancy, full-function protection, and industrial-grade reliability. It is suitable for energy and industrial scenarios with extremely high requirements for safety and continuity. Its modular architecture also facilitates later maintenance and functional expansion.

1. Dual redundant architecture

The REG216 system adopts a dual independent configuration (system A and system B), including independent power supply, signal input (taken from different CT/PT windings) and trip output. When a single system fails, the other system can still ensure the safe operation of the equipment, eliminate the protection dead zone, and improve the fault tolerance of the power system.

2. Comprehensive protection functions

Electrical quantity protection: integrated in digital protection devices (such as REG216C), covering more than 30 functions such as generator differential protection (K87), stator grounding protection (K64), demagnetization protection (K40), frequency anomaly protection (K81), etc., to deal with faults such as phase short circuit, overvoltage, reverse power, etc.

Non-electrical quantity protection: supports water cut protection, cooler fault protection, etc., and ensures equipment safety through multi-dimensional monitoring.

High-speed response: adopts high-precision algorithms (such as second harmonic braking ratio differential), response time ≤1ms, and quickly isolates faults.

3. Modular design and compatibility

The system consists of expandable modules, such as:

Control module: such as 216EA62 (high-performance processor), 216NG62A (supports vector control and multi-protocol communication);

Protection module: such as 216DB61 (signal processing), 216NG63A (logic control card).

The module is compatible with Profibus, Modbus and other protocols, and can be seamlessly integrated into DCS or PLC systems, adapting to power plants, substations, and industrial automation scenarios.

4. Application areas

Mainly used in large-scale generator sets (such as thermal power, hydropower), key nodes of power grids and high-energy-consuming enterprises (such as petrochemicals and metallurgy) to ensure the stable operation of generators, main transformers, and plant transformers. Typical cases show that it improves efficiency by 20% and reduces downtime in the automated production line of the automotive manufacturing industry.
